My Spectrum Dutch Etym Dict directs as follows:
(sorry, this is gonna be in Dutch, I'm too work-fried to translate right
now)
---
toon (2) in /tentoonstellen/, zie /tonen/
tonen ... vgl. mnd. /t=F4nen/, mhd. /zounen/, /z=F4nen/, me. /taunen/...;=
staat
naast mnl. /t=F4ghen/, os. /t=F4gian/, ohg /zougen/, waarvan de herkomst
duidelijk wordt door got. /ataugjan/. Het grondwoord is dus een afl. van
/oog/ en komt ook zelfstandig voor: mnl. /=F4ghen/... got. /augjan/. De s=
s.
/at-augjan/ betekent dus 'iets voor ogen brengen'. De vorm van /tonen/ he=
eft
-----
[Key: mnd: Middle Low German, mhd: Middle High German, me. Middle English=
,
mnl. Middle Dutch, os. Old Saxon, ohg. Old High German, got. Gothic.
ss=3Dsamenstelling (compound)]
It appears that the root meaning is 'to bring something before the eyes'.
The change from /g/ to /n/ is, however, "hypothetisch", and it is uncerta=
in
whether the /n/ form really *is* younger than the /g/ form. At least, tha=
t's
how I read it. Apologies for any possible misinterpretation.
