Maybe because dead bodies are always paler than living ones? thus paleness gets
associated with death...
Note that it's not always true. IIRC, the Egyptian Ka (the nearest thing to
ghosts they had :) ) is supposed to be black... (I may be wrong though, it's a
long time since I read about Egyptian culture)

I think the idea of ghosts comes automatically as soon as a culture presupposes
the existence of a mind, spirit or soul (or more than one :)) ) different in
nature and separable from the material body.
As for why the idea of a soul separate from the body is so common throughout
the world... I don't know what it's originated from. Maybe that's the proof
that it actually exists ;))) .
