I second that (my deepest apologies to the Francophones of the
list.) I took five years of French, and now I can't stand the stuff.
Along similar lines with German; I love to hear the good, stirring
Wagnarian stuff, but when I listen to love songs in German, I can't
help but snicker. Of course, to the German speakers I'm sure they're
sweet, but being raised on Beethoven (the 9th!) and Wagner, German
love songs just don't do it for me.
BTW: Korean music (the modern, more Western kind, not the older,
now almost extinct folk music) strikes me the same way. Korean is
great for really stirring, oomphful (new word) music.
Just my own peculiar ear,
:Peter
