Both. Originally, only Arabic was used; the oldest known manuscript in Swahili dates to 1728 and is in the Arabic script. Latin began to take over about 1850, and is now standard, although Arabic script is still in use, especially among rural native speakers (native speakers of Swahili are only about 10% of the total). While looking for the answer to this question, I found this amusing page: http://f2.org/humour/language/swahili.html . -- And through this revolting graveyard of the universe the muffled, maddening beating of drums, and thin, monotonous whine of blasphemous flutes from inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond Time; the detestable pounding and piping whereunto dance slowly, awkwardly, and absurdly the gigantic tenebrous ultimate gods -- the blind, voiceless, mindless gargoyles whose soul is Nyarlathotep.
