Both. Originally, only Arabic was used; the oldest known manuscript in
Swahili dates to 1728 and is in the Arabic script. Latin began to take
over about 1850, and is now standard, although Arabic script is still in
use, especially among rural native speakers (native speakers of Swahili
are only about 10% of the total).
