Yeah.. there's a truetype editor called GOTE, but it looks like it's
in a pretty early stage of development, and the webpage hasn't been
updated for a long time.

Other than that I've seen no way of producing proportional fonts other
than Metafont.

Not really - I'm not saying my knowledge is particularly advanced, but
I've been using Linux for a few years now. It's just a badly
supported printer (well, there are drivers that are supposed to work,
but I've never any response out of it). I'd have learnt LaTeX a long
time ago, but it's hard to get enthused about a text processor when
you can't print your output. (I do have another printer that kind of works,
but it's an old laser printer that needs a new toner cartridge and
preferably an obscure memory upgrade card, and I've never got around
to acquiring them. If I use it now the pages are smudged and it's
likely to run out of memory if presented with something challenging,
like a table.)
