My favorite Word story:
What happened when you handed Word (for Windows) 1.0 a Word 2.0 document?
Did it say "Upgrade to 2.0, you nit"? No, indeed. It tried to load the
file anyway and then crashed.
Why? Simple. Word files are core dumps, that's why they can be saved
and restored so fast, and why even Microsoft has trouble writing 100%
converters from one version to another. When 1.0 loaded a core dump
that worked with 2.0, it tried to operate with it and promptly GPFed,
since the internal pointers made no sense.
