Actually, in the Chinese I learned, "Dong ma?" is perfectly fine, and is quite common.
"Dong bu dong", and the whole "X bu X" pattern seemed restricted to certain
words. In general the Chinese in Firefly is pretty good, and when it's not,
it's damn close to the Chinglish we students used to speak. My only complaint -
their pronunciation is atrocious! ;)
