Why would sg/pl be unneccesary? Just because we don't use it in English.

If you mean an Obviative(reading books on Native American Indian languages really does improve your linguistic knowledge), I'd say it's a main character/incidental character distinction. The main character being the person you're focussing on. For instance - He(3p)'s called (Name) They(4p) hate him(3p). Where 3rd person represents the main character, and fourth person represents another. If you mean something different, then this is useless, but it's an interesting system, nonetheless.
