Something that I've noted is that when pronouncing strange names from fantasy
literature or the like, my linguistically naive friends tend to render _s z sh
zh_ as /s s s\ s/. That's to say, they don't take _zh_ as analoguous to _sh_,
but instead just ignore the _h_. Is this something your test subjects also do?
(For non-Swedes; the letter _z_ occurs only in loanwords, where it's normally
read as /s/, eg. _zon_ /su:n/ "zone". The only remotely common exception I can
think of is _schizofren_ with the colloquial shortening _schizo_ where it is
/ts/. These words are also unusual in that _sch_ is /sk/ rather than /x/.)
