I would recommend using actual words instead of (or in addition to)
the |<, <, etc. First, it would make it a little more apparent what
exactly the links do. Second, it would make the links longer, which
would make them easier to click on. Right now it takes a lot of
precision mouse movement, which takes a noticeable amount of time, to
position the mouse on the 1- or 2-character-long links.
Also, it might be cool, since you're using JavaScript, to assign
shortcut keys to the navigation links, the way Wikipedia does.
