(1) Because a programmer was being lazy
(2) Because someone was an idiot and thought there was some logic to
forcing a particular font rather than defaulting to 'monospace'.*
* Anyone with websites here, never ever set the font (for body text at
least) to be something like ..., Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif. That's just
utter stupidity. sans-serif should be the only one, or perhaps the second
followed by an uncommon font. You are not the viewer (except on your
computer): your user is. Don't try to trump their settings.</rant>
