I didn't indicate the empty alif in any way.  This is traditionally
translated into English as "In the name of God, the Beneficent, the
Merciful."  Every sura of the Qur'aan but one starts with this.

Actually, this phrase has been useful for me when debating street
preachers who were abusing Muslims.  When pressed, some claim they've
read the Qur'aan and found it lacking.  Asking them how every sura
starts is a good test of the depth of their studies.
