I'm not surprised, really. Fifty is a lot of states, and not all of them
get much in the way of international press. I live in GA (Georgia) and
I'm pretty sure I wouldn't recognize all 159 of the counties we have in
this state.
For the record, here are all 50 U.S. state abbreviations (which I'm typing
from memory, with their capital cities thrown in, because it's good
practice and fun!):
