I always loved such lists. When I was younger, I used
to know every capital of every country in the world,
including Nyassaland. But after a while, I felt kind
of disappointed to see that this changed all the time,
except for Paris, of course, so I gave up. Anyway, I
still know by heart all the numbers of the French
Departements, from 01 (Ain) to 95 (Val d'Oise), even
if a mix up a little the Overseas Departements (971
and so on). Isn't it beautiful to mention casually in
a discussion, "oh yes, a 48, from Lozère, isn't it ?"
Especially if you never put a toe in Lozère (which
would be a shame, because it is beautiful).
I heard that some American people who stayed for a
long time in jail used to recite the whole list of
States with their capital city, on normal and reverse
order, and then the same with the chronological list
of all the Presidents of the US, to keep a mental
activity.
What would they have done if they didn't know that ?
