I can't find any printed form other than "ye"; I suggest you have here a "mondegreen", as in Ye Highlands and ye Lowlands, And where have ye been? You have slain the Earl Amurray, And Lady Mondegreen. (i.e. "of Murray, and laid him on the green"). However, the Web site I cited earlier gives the third line of "Deck the halls" as "Fill the mead cup, drain the barrel" rather than the line I know, "Don we now our gay apparel" ... and changes "Yuletide" to "Christmas"! *arrgh* -- John Cowan http://www.ccil.org/~cowan cowan@ccil.org You tollerday donsk? N. You tolkatiff scowegian? Nn. You spigotty anglease? Nnn. You phonio saxo? Nnnn. Clear all so! 'Tis a Jute.... (Finnegans Wake 16.5)
