You might if you take a course on phonetics or historical linguistics. Those are
his two areas. He was a professor at UCLA--or more precisely, he was an adjunct
faculty member, who supported himself through a series of 1-2 year appointments
and big government grants, rather than having tenure. I gather that his position
at Berkeley is tenure-track, which is good...
