My only method for this is usage. If ever I encounter two words that are too confusingly similar, I drop one of them and search for a replacement. I believe this is the way natlangs work, too. Quite a few similarities are in fact allowed, but if they result in too much confusion, replacements are sought. LEF ...back from vacation now, ready for some serious work/conlanging...
