My father had always been encouraged to make music (play the oboe in his case).
But as soon as it turned out he wanted to be a professional musician, his
mother (neurologist) and stepfather (reverend) were very much against; after
all, music is not a real job, so better become a doctor.
On the other hand, as he turned out to be successful as a musician, they were
sort of proud too.
Thus:
piano = higher culture = upper-class = us!
but:
professional pianist = no real work = no money = them!
