Striking away from the body puts the flame in more jeopardy. Striking it
towards the body shelters it from drafts, and brings the flame closer to the
cigarette in your mouth. It also implies that little extra risk. (I'm
skillful enough not to burn my expensive suit.) I've seen macho men do this
all the time. And yes, the "proper" way to examine your nails, if you're a
"real man," is to turn your palm up and curl your fingers. (That's how *I*
do it.) :)
