Whereas my reply to Andrew's scenerio of a programming runnning round the
clock was flippant, to my mind, artficial quantity created within
preconceived parameters is of little real use. If one day we were to create
truly creative & sentient programs which could conceive of and design
communication in new & unique languages, I feel at best they would serve to
outline the limits of human consciousness.
For me, the more variety of languages (nat, con, art or aux) to which I'm
exposed, and the thus the potential for new ways of perception &
communication, the closer I come to understanding human communication and
humanity in general.
Relevance is something we each must evaluate. No, my study of languages
won't stop wars itself, fix the hole in the ozone layer, repopulate the
disappearing amphibians.
