That's not really a matter of creativity, to my mind. It comes down to solving a (admittedly complicated) system of equations describing the engineering constraints (balancing fuel capacity and mass, engine thrust and mass, etc.). It's no secret that computers are better at solving complex mathematical equations quickly than humans.
