Both go the same way, actually.  cf. G <the:r> from *g_hwe:r, like <thermos>
from *g_w_her-mo-s.   [Though it's argued that a double consonant instead of a
single results from the cluster intervocalically, on the basis of hippos <
*ek-wos.]
