YAEPT: (sorry) GVS repeating itself?

My son is just now playing golf on the
Xbox and if I'm not a totally bad ear,
or the sound quality abysmal, one of the
'commentators' pronounces _green_ as
[gr@jn] or maybe [gri\jn] or something
inbetween.  Has any native speaker heard
this IRL?  I'm sure the Great Vowel Shift
has never ended: English heavy syllable
nuclei keep crawling up the edges of the
vowel space and falling down the middle! :-)
