Special voice in some languages. Some languages use the reflexive for that, so that "They hit themselves" and "they hit each other" are not (at least not obligatorily) distinguished. Some use other idioms. IIRC, Biblical Hebrew had something like "One man said to his friend" for "They said to each other". I don't know if that construction was limited to 3rd person plural, or if there were similar uses for other persons. -- "There's no such thing as 'cool'.
