How about doing that sort of thing as a game? One person provides texts
and smooth translations, and everyone else tries to make an interlinear
and learn as much as possible about the language. Or as an extension of
that, they try to translate a second text. There could be a standard text
that most of them use for ease, as it doesn't matter if people know the
smooth translation beforehand.
