A teacher I had in high school said that "Dr. automatically adds about 2
inches to the thickness of your glasses" :-)
Personally, I find it very discomforting when teachers, professors,
whatever, want you to call them by their first name. I don't like
calling people by their first names who have authority over me, altho I
have grown used to calling my managers at work by their first names
(since everyone does, it would be odd to be the only one who doesn't).
Altho I *still* refuse to say Pastor Jack which many people do (they
also use PJ). I almost always just use "Pastor", both in reference and
in addressing. "PJ" if necessary to differentiate (which is quite rare,
of course, as we only have the one pastor), since that sounds like it
could be a first name, I guess that's why I don't feel awkward using
it. I think the problem I have with "Pastor Jack" is using a title of
respect with a *first* name.
