They don't need your real name. However, you can use your real name
to set up the account, and you can change the name that it sends with
your mail. You'll find it in the "Settings" section. I had mine as
"Cowbert von Moo" originally, so privacy laws aside, I'm pretty sure
they don't check.
Your problem may be something far more subtle. Make sure that your
web browser is Javascript enabled and allows websites to dump cookies
on your computer. Otherwise, gmail will "forget" who you are right
after you introduce yourself. Only Eru knows what's going on though.
