I wonder how this was enforced... I have images of what was done to
discourage speakers of "minority" languages from speaking their
languages (e.g. Welsh in the UK, Breton in France, ...) at school.
Perhaps no beatings, but did they have to wear a sign of shame around
their neck or something?
