I can understand that.. Since the French came from the NE, as well as I
remember something about the Lakota and related peoples being from the
woodlands..
But, not sure where the Mandan and like come from, they are Lakota
related, but.

I believe it is actually Algonkian, Cree or Ojibwa??  The latter
were certainly enemies of the Sioux (Lakhota, Dakota, Nakota)
and in fact largely chased them out onto the Great Plains.  Yet
another time I wish I had left my lg books here at home, heavy
sigh.
