Who's they? As far as I know, most of the spelling regulation that occurs
is relatively dialect neutral, like nite for night or shood for should. I
guess there are some oddities like Americans doing weird things with -o-
and -aw- (e.g. dawg), but if these catch on anywhere, they won't where
they aren't helpful, and so we'll simply have different spellings were
there's different pronunciations. (This probably won't help communication
at all, and will probably be one of the major steps on the road to non-
intelligibility in English.)
