Well, that's certainly a reasonable view, if not the only possible one;
if they are two words, they certainly descend from a single ancestral word.

No, Sanskrit. It means modification of a phoneme at a morpheme boundary
to agree with the adjacent sound in the next or preceding morpheme. It's
called "external" when the morpheme boundary is also a word boundary,
"internal" otherwise.
