Actually, I think it is.  There is, actually, a pair:
      bureddo  (bread)
      bure:do  (blade/braid)

Apparently English short vowels are more reminiscent of /V?/ than /V/
in Japanese.  (Similar to how /{/ sometimes is spelled as "ya".)
