You don't like ddwydd ddae? :) You could try for a more conservative
phonology. You could introduce some kind of environmental factor that
halts the mutational system before it develops so fully. You could
invoke a Second Mutation that demutates (hardens, I guess) certain
mutated sounds. You could invoke a sound shift certain sounds in
certain environments change to something else.
