There's an old Webster's somewhere (Project Gutenberg?)
but I prefer WordNet, which is downloadable. I run it
with a Python interface and with a VB interface; both
offer capabilities the other doesn't. It has a command
line interface, as well.
WordNet only covers nouns, adjectives, adverbs and
verbs, so when you want to research conjunctions (as I
did the other night) or some other part of speech, you
have to use a different resource.
I also like and use the American Heritage Electronic
Dictionary, but that's Windows only and carries a price
tag.
