I think it depends on how you define "beginner". I consider myself a
beginner (sometimes this list goes way over my head), but I have no
trouble with Mithun's _Languages of Native North America_. I was
surprised how accessible it was, actually. There is a lot of lingustic
vocab, but I think most of it is pretty basic.
