Thanks to Sally for her additions to this list! I think I'll try my hand at
translation into Kel (only interlinear translations are available, as I have
alot of work to do on the lexicon). 1s=1st person singular, 2s=2nd person
singular, 3s=3rd person singular (either gender [Kel has optional gender
affixes]), and 4s=4th person singular.
Comments welcome.
1a. He sang while dancing. = Completive 3s sing while dance.
1b. He sang and then danced. = Completive 3s sing then dance.
2a. He1 sang while he2 danced. = Completive 3s sing while 4s dance.
2b. He1 sang and then he2 danced. = Completive 3s sing then 4s dance.
3a. He1 said that he1 sang while he1 danced. = Completive 3s say
begin-indirect-quote completive sing while dance end-indirect-quote.
3b. He1 said that he1 sang and then he1 danced. = Completive 3s say
begin-indirect-quote completive sing then dance end-indirect-quote.
4a. He1 said that he1 sang while he2 danced. = Completive 3s say
begin-indirect-quote completive sing while 4s dance end-indirect-quote.
4b. He1 said that he1 sang and then he2 danced. = Completive 3s say
begin-indirect-quote sing then 4s dance end-indirect-quote.
5a. He1 said that he2 sang while he1 danced. = Completive 3s say
begin-indirect-quote completive 4s sing while 3s dance end-indirect-quote.
5b. He1 said that he2 sang and then he1 danced. = Completive 3s say
begin-indirect-quote completive 4s sing then 3s dance end-indirect-quote.
6a. He1 said that he2 sang while he3 danced. = Completive 3s say
begin-indirect-quote completive 4s sing while different person dance
end-indirect-quote.
6b. He1 said that he2 sang and then he3 danced. = Completive 3s say
begin-indirect-quote completive 4s sing then other person dance
end-indirect-quote.
7. He would sing if the other would dance. = Subjunctive 3s dance then 4s
sing.
8. If he sings I would dance. = Subjunctive 3s sing then 1s dance.
9. If I sing then I have to dance. = Subjunctive 1s sing then obligative
dance.
Cheers,
