Mine had never been wild. They were born in North Carolina. I didn't cage mine much anyway. They sort of free ranged around the house. And they live considerably longer in captivity than they do in the wild-- up to about 10 years. They did a lot of drape climbing and gliding, often landing on me. ;) Their cage was about 5 feet tall, so when they were in there, they did have room to move around. Gerbils haven't been that domesticated all that long either, but people seem to have become accustomed to the idea of keeping them in cages, although they are even also not really suitable for caged life, being burrowing animals.
