I do the same. I seem to have problems knowing in advance what I
consider 'nice sound', however. Therefore, I have to actively
remember what I liked and it take several phonologies before I'm
satisfied. While designing, I sometimes decide to do something
different/weird instead of optimising the phonology for pleasant
sound.

Aha. These are not mutually exclusive for me: I first feel, and then
make up a formal structure.
