Aesthetics is very strange. :) For example, I find velar and other back
of the throat sounds to be uglier than other sounds, but for some reason
I love Basque despite the fact it seems to be a bit overendowed in the
velar department. Likewise, written Welsh (and Swedish) look like they
should sound extremely ugly, but the intonation patterns in both cases
make them sound nice to my ears. I don't think there's any one formula
or anything anyone uses. It's just a matter of gut feeling: the same way
I like certain kinds of music, but occasionally I'll hear a song which
is a kind of music I normally hate, and it'll click and I'll love it, or
I'll hear a song very similar to ones I like, but for some reason it
doesn't click and I don't like it.
Of course, deep down there might be very good reasons... but people
typically don't understand their own motivations completely. ;) I'm not
even sure if it's possible to understand yourself completely...
