That's what I thought too. In fact, ë is used in the Americanist transcriptions for a MIDHI BACK vowel. So the the deirisis (¨) could represent "more front" if a back symbol is used, or "more back" if a front symbol is used -- in other words, centralize. -kristian- 8)
