Well, most of us here use a version of X-SAMPA (I can't find the URL for it
right away) or CPA, a new ASCII IPA scheme designed by one of us (and there's
also my scheme which I didn't have time to post about yet). But nearly all of
us understand X-SAMPA, as long as the symbols used don't refer to too exotic
sounds.
