Sorry for the provincialism. The default locale is "C" on many systems
here, so you have to change that in order to get UTF-8.

I only use ISO dates regardless of the locale setting, so that doesn't
matter. What does annoy me about en_US is that if you set LC_COLLATE to it,
you suddenly lose case sensitivity in string comparisons.
