Hey! What about gucharmap? It's no Babelmap, I admit, but it's great.

(I have to agree, however, that kcharselect is pitiful.)

OTOH, speaking of Babelmap, it seems to quite well on freenixes — love that
word! — under Wine, if you set Wine to simulate Windows XP. I haven't tested
it thoroughly, though.

I happen to work with Wine development, so, if you spot Babelmap doing some
unwanted thing under Wine, drop a line and I'll see what I can do.
