THEORY: Required Reading?

I've already read quite a bit about language and auxlangs, but I am certainly less
informed than most of the list. Are there any books you would recommend as a
sort of "required reading list" to be adequately informed on the subject? We're
all sharp people on this list, and so even with limited reading I think anyone
here can make a valuable contribution, but I would like to become aware of all
the "common knowledge". Are there any particularly good books on alphabets,
grammars, language in general?
