OT: Help with the Role of a Linguist

       Does anyone know where I can find a definition (preferably online) of
what a linguist does?  My mother's doing an institute at USC, and she needs a
definition, and the US Department of Labor doesn't seem to consider
linguistics an actual profession.  Linguistic anthropologist, yes, linguist,
no.  Can you help?
