Plain Latin: a better reading would be "the siblings". It's possible that the Latin word Germanus 'a German' has nothing to do with the ordinary adj. germanus 'of a brother/sister, real, genuine', but surely that's the null hypothesis. We also have OIr gair 'neighbor', which would suggest "neighbors [of the Celts]" as a reading.

Also possible: Common Gmc *gair- 'spear'. As for Saksaa, that's the country of the knifemen. -- John Cowan jcowan@reutershealth.com http://www.ccil.org/~cowan Does anybody want any flotsam? / I've gotsam. Does anybody want any jetsam? / I can getsam. --Ogden Nash, _No Doctors Today, Thank You_
