What's interesting is that 'Italia' returned to life, while 'Gallia' has
remained out of normal use. I'm given to understand that 'Italia' was revived
by the Carolingians on romantic "let's bring Antiquity back to life" grounds,
but I wonder if it wasn't also a snub to the Langobardian elite; a way of
telling who was now boss. Naturally they had no interest in suggesting that
the Franks were no longer in charge of Gaul!
