You should use a threaded mail reader and just delete the entire thread if
it doesn't interest you. It's hard to survive a mailing list without a
threaded mail reader! I used to use Pine, which isn't threaded, and being
on multiple high-traffic mailing lists is just horrendous, and I ended up
scanning subject lines with my finger almost unconsciously hitting the
delete key. But now, with Mutt, I can just delete an entire thread with
one keypress, and it sure helps a lot. (Plus, Mutt can be configured to
display which mailing list a message comes from -- very useful to make
sure you didn't delete something important by mistake.)
Of course, the fact that the university advice thread which has been
taking up half the traffic on this list doesn't actually belong here is
perfectly good reason to ask people to stop and/or take it elsewhere. :-P
For me, I'd just keep that thread-delete button handy...
