/SNIP! (what's the usenet term for a post like this again?)/ You'll really, really learn to hate the threads of several hundred mails or more discussing how english word x is pronounced around the world then. The problem isn't the label CHAT but that people don't use it. If you don't want to read a "chatty" post, and it has CHAT in the subject, you can delete it or skip it on sight. Other chatty posts you have to open and scroll around in to discover whether they are ignorable or not. We (medium old guard at least, if I may be so bold as to speak for "us") have never trumped through our view of what is off-topic and not and I personally like it that way. Yes there's lots of traffic (btw does your mail-reader thread? a lot easier to deal with huge amounts of mail then) but like with all mail, you quickly learn to pick and choose and ignore the rest (or you go nuts ;) ). You learn what people are interested in the same thing you are, and who seemingly rarely has anything interesting to say (yours truly for instance), who's likely to misinterpret anything, who's easily inflammable... Suffer in silence like the rest of us ;) If you can't handle this pittle excuse of traffic, pray you never end up sysadmining for a big network, wasting three hours a day just keeping up with that day's whin^Wmail alone... worst part of the job :/ </martyr> t.
