  Maybe not "despite" but "because of", it could be a
hypercorrection. Both intervocalic -l- and -n- regularly disappear
in Portuguese. It is possible that the linguistic sense failed to
restore the correct form of "pomo de 'aranja" < "pomo de *naranja".
